Indulging the BatB AU plot bunny. The bunny’s got ideas for Gaston and it’s making some interesting changes to the original story I’ve been imagining…
In this AU, the premise is born that essentially Gaston, a horribly corrupt and despicable villain, wins. However… the idea that came to mind in the “prologue” I wrote earlier is that the story, as seen in the Disney movie, isn’t the whole unvarnished truth, but rather is the story as told by Belle, from her perspective, with the ending she wished had happened.
The reality is quite a bit different, at least in regards to Gaston. Belle’s perception of Gaston is severely skewed considering he did kill her best friend/true love right in front of her. The biggest difference is that not all of Gaston’s actions were fueled by malice.
In reality, Gaston was not a completely reprehensible, heartless villain as portrayed in the original story.
Hmmm… I think if Maurice’s health really took a turn for the worse, Belle might be tempted to marry Gaston for money. Maybe? I could picture a not-so-evil Gaston offering to provide for her family. And Belle is contemplating such a marriage in general, but after the “crazy spell” she’s become infamous for, no other guy is interested. With no brothers or moneymaking skill, it could put her in a desperate situation.

That is definitely one of the main marriage options I’m kicking around. In this AU, Gaston does genuinely care about her, although he never really understood/understands her and the way she thinks. Especially after the Beast incident, poor Gaston is at a complete loss as to show Belle how much he really cares.
If this option is the one that leads to marriage, Gaston thinks he’s finally made a breakthrough when she accepts his proposal finally… But then, as time progresses and he experiences how cold/angry/distant she still is… Complicating matters is the fact that Belle doesn’t “talk” to him about what is bothering her…
